1. Halls of Residence

Pros:

· One of the best ways to meet new people during Fresher’s Week before lectures have started

· Get you started being more independent

· All-inclusive bills to take away some of the stress of moving away from home

· Most provide a cleaner for communal areas every week or every fortnight

· On-site managers to ensure safety

· As they are connected to the university they will either be close to where lectures will be or there will be a bus service

Cons:

· Luck of the draw on what sort of housemates you will get

· If you enjoy your parties sometimes halls are not the best as you can often get noise complaints

2. Living at Home

Pros:

· Don’t have to move away from family

· Easy way to save money

· Can use commute as time to study

Cons:

· Commute may not be desirable if having to travel at peak times or long distance

· Less opportunities to meet new people

· Depending how far you have to travel events may not always be easy to attend

3. Private Accommodation

Pros:

· More independency

· More freedom in terms of visitors and noise (depending on neighbours)

· Choose your own housemates

· Universities often have approved companies or landlords

Cons:

· In charge of all own bills

· All own cleaning

4. Study Abroad

Pros:

· Amazing experience

· Looks great on CV

· New and challenging

Cons:

· Potential language barriers

· Less opportunities to go home or visit friends

Birthdays

A lot of my friends don’t bother making a big deal about their birthdays, but I’ve always been a firm believer in celebrating. Why not? It’s the one day of the year you can make a big fuss about yourself. And an excuse to celebrate exactly how you want! I enjoy going out of my way for people’s birthdays, baking cakes, getting presents etc.

However, last year I was not excited about my birthday and now this year I’m not looking forward to it at all. And it really upsets my mom because she knows how much I act like a little child each year.

Maybe my 18^th was good it’s hard for my birthdays to live up to that expectation. Or maybe it’s because last year and this year I won’t be spending it with one of the most important people to me. Whatever the reason, I miss my excitement. Usually the countdown begins exactly a month before but right now I don’t even want my birthday to come.

But at least I still get excited over other people’s birthdays!

Career change can be done at any age

Chandler doesn’t change jobs until quite late in the show and his experience shows the stigma surrounding his age yet he still goes on to get a good job in his chosen field.

You should do something you enjoy

As you witness Rachel’s struggle to move on from waitressing and Chandler’s hate for his Data Processing job you realise you need to be in a job that you love.

Getting fired isn’t the end of the world

Nearly all of the FRIENDS characters get fired at some point but they all get back on their feet. It may be just a TV show, but it does happen!

You won’t be the same person you were in high school

And so you shouldn’t be. As Monica and Rachel reunite with people they went to school with they see how much they have changed and how little some other people have (Chip) Not just Monica’s weight, but Rachel’s attitude to life.

Relationships out of friendships can work, but not always

Monica and Chandler end up perfectly but Rachel and Joey have much less success, it all depends on how compatible two people are, just be careful not to ruin a good friendship.

Occasionally you may have to prove your love and loyalty if you make a mistake

There are always times when people make a bad decision that may upset a close friend, maybe you won’t have to get inside a box to prove your loyalty sometimes a gesture can reassure people.

Blood isn’t always thicker than water

Not all of the FRIENDS have good relationships with their families and so the group seem stronger than many of the bonds with relatives.

Enjoy your 20's – but remember your life doesn’t end at 30!

Thoughts during Final Year of University

8 Simple Pleasures

1. Sunsets and sunrise

Whenever I go on holiday I have to go down to the beach to watch the sunset, but anywhere the sky can turn wonderful colours.

2. City lights

At night any city can look nice with all its lights. Even Birmingham.

3. Starting a new book

Not many people seem to understand my love for a fresh book, and it’s not just the excitement of a new story, I actually love the feel of new books!

4. Organised desk/room

For me this isn’t exactly a simple pleasure as my room is unbearably messy 95% of the time, but on the rare occasions it’s tidy I feel great accomplishment.

Anything from your favourite perfume to flowers or that smell of a certain someone.

6. Hugs & kisses from the boyfriend

A very soppy pleasure, but there isn’t much that competes with how comforting a cuddle or a kiss on the forehead can be.

7. Filling a photo album/scrapbook

It takes me ages to finally print enough photos and go to the effort of putting them all in albums but it is so worth it once complete.

8. Compliments

Ironically I often get criticised for how I respond to compliments, however I still maintain a simple compliment can mean a lot. Even as simple as “I like your bracelet” or “you look nice today” anything that shows you were noticed.

Is It Okay Not To Know?

As a student going into my third year at university I am at a stage where I feel like I should know exactly what I want to do as my career. But I don’t.

Really I think I should have known before I chose my degree, but I had even less idea then. So I chose to do American Studies as it is an inter-disciplinary subject that can lead to various directions.

I went through the typical phases when I was younger; teacher, actress, lawyer etc, being put off each the older I got. And now I spend nearly every day wondering what I would be good at and where I should start.

I envy those around me that know exactly what career they want and are already pursuing their dream because I feel like I should have it figured out by now. I realise people go into a career then later want to change because it wasn’t as fulfilling as they thought it would be.

Talking to friends I am not the only person in this situation so I know it’s not unusual but I can’t help but feel a bit worried about it.

In my mind now I think it’s going to take me a while to decide and I need to do a lot more research and gain a lot more experience in different fields that I think I might be interested in. Then hopefully I will find something I’m really passionate about and will be brilliant at.

My Bad Habit

I’m sure I have many annoying habits but this is the most typical one.

Biting my nails.

It’s gross I know, I regularly get reminded of how much dirt gets trapped under your nails. But I honestly do try to stop. I once was told that if you stop for 3 months you’re likely to break the habit but I can go even longer than that and I will still return to biting them.

I tried using Stop’n Grow but found it made everything you eat with your hands taste disgusting too. So now I always have to paint my nails to prevent myself from biting them. I’ll finally grow them but now they are so weak they break by themselves anyway. Then once the varnish is off for longer than a day the habit is back.

Like most girl I have a million nail varnishes and I never stick to the same make as there are so many good ones out there. I’m currently using a strengthener as well.

I’ve considered acrylic nails but I hear they are really bad for your nails once you take them off.

Nerves and boredom definitely increase the biting, but no matter what I do I can’t seem to break the habit for good!
